Classic Blue in Georgian interiors

Every year Pantone releases a new ‘Colour of the Year’ and for 2020 the trendmeisters at Pantone have opted for Classic Blue (19-4052). This colour is said to have an influence on everything from fashion and entertainment through to interior design.

This year’s colour happens to be one our favourite tones here at Etons of Bath: a deep, pure blue. We really enjoy using these blues in our Georgian interior design schemes.

In the Georgian era, blue was very prevalent and used in many rooms of the house (see our blog post on paints here) and was particularly popular in libraries and dining rooms. So, we’d like to think the Georgians got there before Pantone did…

Using Blue in Georgian properties with high ceilings

As experts in interior design for Georgian homes and hotels, we  love working with blue when designing Georgian properties. This dark tone works particularly well when used in rooms with high ceilings and an abundance of natural light, making it a fabulous choice for Georgian interiors.

There is a myth that using light colours in a Georgian interior make a room feel larger and dark colours make a room feel smaller. However, at Etons of Bath we disagree! So we do use dark tones such as navy to ‘trick the eye’ by deceiving corners and therefore blurring the boundaries of a space. This dark tone also provides the perfect backdrop for art within a room and looks exceptional with gilt and brass.

Using Blue in Georgian drawing rooms

We’ve also used a dark blue in a Georgian drawing room (just before Christmas) to draw emphasis to the mouldings and high ceilings. Contrast is key within this space as the mouldings and features were kept white and pop against the dark walls. Equally, accents of colour pop on this tone and suddenly the blue acts as a neutral within the space. Don’t be afraid to use blue in a variety of spaces and applications. It looks fabulous on walls, upholstery and joinery. From lacquered to matte, classic blue is always chic and timeless.
